Before and After School

Before and After School
Welcome to the After School Program at King's Kids Academy!
As our School Age Director and After School Teacher, I love helping children decompress, explore their passions, and build essential life skills after a long day in the classroom.By the time children arrive, they have been focused and challenged all day. They don't need another rigid classroom—they need a reset, independence, and the chance to have fun while learning.

A Typical Afternoon Flow
- The After-School Reset (10–15 Minutes): As kids arrive, we start with 10–20 minutes of calm time. I read a chapter from a book aloud while everyone settles in. Studies show that a quiet transition right after school helps children regulate their emotions, improves appetite, and even promotes better sleep at night.
- Choice Time & Snack (30–45 Minutes): Children choose from thoughtfully prepared activities or explore classroom materials of their own choosing. Open-format snack is available during this window so they can eat when they are ready. (While I encourage homework, it is never required!)
- Outdoor Exploration: Next, we head outside for fresh air, group games, or free play—often letting the kids vote on how they want to spend the time. (Note: If the weather is poor, we pivot to active games in our Big Room, or extend our quiet time if the kids need extra rest).
- Child-Led Group Activities: After returning inside, we dive into projects tailored to our current group interests. Lately, our school-agers have been obsessed with insects, rocks, and minerals! This fall, we are also exploring "retro" toys and games from my childhood to share what life was like before tech was everywhere.
Mindfulness & Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
As the Mindfulness Coordinator at KKA, I weave SEL skills into everything we do:
- Sportsmanship & Teamwork: Games focus heavily on winning and grace in losing.
- Autonomy & Confidence: We give children choices throughout the day—from snack timing to voting on activities—helping them learn to advocate for their needs and build a strong sense of community.
- Conflict Resolution: I work closely with students to help them build emotional regulation and problem-solving skills.
- Parent Partnership: I believe in staying in close communication so you always know how your child is doing, what they are interested in, and where they are growing.
